Artist Statement

My work is based in print making and drawing. I work from first hand observation and photographic references to create images which capture the essence of a place or situation. I have always combined different processes and the photographic image within printmaking has interested me from my first photo etchings in the 1970s.
I spent nearly 40 years teaching art initially in schools and for the last twenty years of my career lecturing on a foundation course in the Midlands. My own practice informed my teaching and I continue to experiment with different media although most recently I have worked mainly with drawing. I have had the opportunity to travel fairly extensively and never go anywhere without a sketchbook. I develop drawings and collected ephemera from my sketchbooks into larger drawings and prints. A continued commitment to life drawing has stayed with me since I first attended Birmingham School of Art in the 1950s.
