Artist Statement

Peter Baldwin studied at Norwich School of Art from 1958 to 62 under Michael Andrews and Jeffrey Camp and has had extensive experience at teaching painting and drawing for the Norfolk County Council and lecturing in the history of art for the WEA and UEA Centre for Continuing Education. He has work in public collections including Norwich Castle Museum, Norfolk County Council, North Norfolk District Council and the Guella Purchase Trust. Publications have included ‘Wide Skies’, a survey of Norfolk painters and he is included in the ‘Dictionary of British Artists since 1945’.
He exhibits regularly with the Norwich Twenty Group, various open shows and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. His work can be seen at the 18/21art gallery in Tombland, Norwich.
The work innovates within a modernist tradition embracing a relational aesthetic. The subject matter involves ordinary situations made mysterious by means of implied narratives and cryptic symbols embedded within this formal language. The imagery relates to artists such as Balthus, Michael Andrews and David Inshaw, whose paintings allow for the poetic and figurative to coexist with a formalised aesthetic beauty.
